Private Lessons Information Sheet
Welcome to Voice Class, with me, Di Solomon. I'm very excited to begin teaching
Voice
Class at Chapel Lane Performance Studio, and looking forward to meeting lots of
new
people.
Lessons may be booked and paid for a term at a time or just
come for a few
lessons to prepare for something special.
From time to time I may have a performance on lesson day, and I might need to
postpone or
move lessons to accommodate gigs. As I am a full-time entertainer it's important
for me to
be part of shows, and keeping me in the industry makes me a better voice
teacher.
My Background
I started teaching Voice Class at Lombardo Music Rockdale for several years in
the early
1990's & went on to teach at Port Hacking High School, Miranda, where I've
worked since
1994. I have more than 30 years professional industry experience, having held my
first music
residency at age 15. Apart from working as Musical Director at a Preschool in
1982-3, I have
only ever worked as a full-time, multi award winning performer~ vocalist,
pianist, guitarist,
composer & performed and toured with literally hundreds of bands & shows ~not to
mention
more than
20 different Elvis's.
My main work at the moment is playing piano and singing in bars, nightclubs and
functions. I
have won several awards for Piano/Vocalist. Check out my online
full bio for
more info.
What's it all about?
Private voice class with me at Chapel Lane Performance Studio is about getting
the best
from your voice and using it in you own musical style. Class consists of two
equally important
elements, exercises and songs. Students are expected to give both these their
full attention,
and practice about three times a week on songs and exercises. Use your voice
practice as a
break between your homework tasks if it seems too hard to find the time.
What happens in class?
On your first lesson, bring something along to sing, so I can get an idea on
where you're at
right now. You can choose one of the hundreds of songs I have or bring your own.
Click here for a list of my
tracks. In class we start with a warm up, discuss any
up-coming
performances, work on the 'Exercise of the Week' then get on with the song
you're working
on- or start trying songs out to find one that really suits you. For the first
few weeks, I
concentrate mainly on exercises and theory, as this will help establish a solid
basis for good
technique. Posture, breathing and some strange sounding vocal exercises are the
starting
point. Sometimes we do 'singfest' when you can spend most of the class singing
what ever
you like! Fun. Sometimes we work on a recording in class- too much fun!
What Do I Need To Bring?
A bottle of water, not cold, room temp is best and a USB stick to save backing
tracks etc.
If you're bringing your own backing track, have it on a USB stick, an MP3 player
(iPod) or CD
and bring the lyrics printed out. If you're bringing sheet music, make sure it
has guitar chords,
and I usually need to hear your version to play it well for you.
Each student will need to purchase a CD and book for just $10, which has 38
tracks of
demonstrations, exercises & information. I make this CD & book set available at
a very
reasonable price to my students. You can use it long after you have finished
lessons with me
as a warm-up and a work-out.
When Do I Get To Perform
Singing features in the end-of-year Chapel lane Concert, and some singing
students will get to go to a recording studio to make performance backing
tracks. My private students may like to take part in the singing concerts I have
at Port Hacking High twice yearly. We'll definitely be making a recording in
class- even videoing if you like.
HSC Singing
As the Voice Teacher at Port Hacking High School for more than 17 years, I have
helped
students through HSC performance every year. I have a special programme for
HSC
students to help get the best mark you can for your HSC. I can accompany and
rehearse with HSC students, organise bands or other accompanists, arrange and
sing
your backing vocals, source backing tracks, and travel to your school to play
for you.
Whatever you need. Have a look at the online
HSC page too.
How Tough Are You
I tend to be pretty straightforward with my private students. I don't see a
point in
buttering you up with exaggerations. I'm really careful about our song choices,
I strongly
believe that the right song shows your vocal strength, beauty and your skill,
but the
wrong song shows off your flaws and weaknesses. Beyonce‚ might sound amazing
when
she sings it, but if it doesn't make you sound brilliant, well, we'll pick
another song- there
are literally billions to choose from! BILLIONS!! I also expect younger students
to choose
age-appropriate songs for performance (although we might have fun with other
songs in
class).
Payments
You pay me directly at the start of each school term for (usually) 10 lessons to
confirm
your time each week, or you can pay cash each lesson on the day. Classes may
be
taken in Private for 30 minute @ $30 or Private Paired 30 minute @ $20
each.
Group Lessons are organised with Chapel Lane directly. Juniors, Intermediate and
Seniors. They are fun singing songs with group arrangements and some voice
exercises too.
Please Note- If you intend having paired lessons, you usually need to find a
partner
yourself, and I strongly suggest only sharing with someone who has very similar
skill level
to you.
