HSC Students                 repertoire and lyrics

I'm very excited to begin teaching singing at Ettingshausens Dynamic Arts Kirrawee, and looking forward to meeting lots of new people. You might find the following  information helpful, there is also a brochure available from reception at EDA. Invoices are here online or from me in class.

Who?

I started teaching Voice Class at Lombardo Music Rockdale for several years in the early 1990's & went on to teach at Port Hacking High School, Miranda, where I've worked since 1994. I have more than 30 years professional industry experience, having held my first music residency at age 15. Apart from working as Musical Director at a Preschool in 1982-3, I have only ever worked as a full-time, multi award winning performer~ vocalist, pianist, guitarist, composer & performed and toured with literally hundreds of bands & shows ~not to mention 20 different Elvis's. My main work at the moment is playing piano and singing in bars, nightclubs and functions. I have won several awards for Piano/Vocalist. Check out my full bio for more blurb.

What's it all about??
Voice class with me at Ettingshausens Dynamic Arts happens in the Scarlet Room. It's about getting the best from your voice and using it in you own musical style. Class consists of two equally important elements, exercises and songs. Students are expected to give both these their full attention, and practice about three times a week on songs and exercises. Use your practice as a break in your homework if it's hard to find the time.

What happens in class?
On your first lesson, bring something along to sing, so I can get an idea on where you're at right now. You can choose one of the hundreds of songs I have or bring your own. Lists of my tracks are on my website.

In class we start with a quick warm up, discuss any up-coming performances, work on the ?Exercise of the Week? then get on with the song you're working on- or start trying songs out to find one that really suits you. For the first few weeks, I concentrate mainly on exercises and theory, as this will help establish a solid basis for good technique. Posture, breathing and some strange sounding vocal exercises are the starting point. ?˙

What Do I Need To Bring?
A bottle of water, not cold, room temp is best.

If you're bringing your own backing track, have it on a USB stick, an MP3 or CD and bring the lyrics printed out. If you're bringing sheet music, make sure it has guitar chords, and I usually need to hear your version to play it well for you.

Each student will need to purchase a CD and book for just $10, which has 38 tracks of demonstrations, exercises & information. I make this CD & book set available at a very reasonable price to my students. You can use it long after you have finished lessons with me as a warm-up & a work-out.

When Do I Get To Perform?
Late last year, 2011,  EDA introduced a Singing and Acting end-of-year show. It went of like a cracker, it was very entertaining and a wonderful showcase for our talents. We're planning something similar this year- details to follow. We'll definitely be making a recording in class.

HSC Singing
As the Voice Teacher at Port Hacking High School for more than 17 years, I have helped students through HSC performance every year. I have a special programme for HSC students to help get the best mark you can for your HSC. I can accompany and rehearse with HSC students, organise bands or other accompanists, arrange and sing your backing vocals, source backing tracks, and travel to your school to play for you. Whatever you need. Have a look at the HSC page too.

How Tough Are You?
I tend to be pretty straightforward with my students. I don't see a point in buttering you up with exaggerations. I'm really careful about our song choices, I strongly believe that the right song shows your vocal strength, beauty and your skill, but the wrong song shows your flaws and weaknesses. Beyonce‚ might sound amazing when she sings it, but if it doesn't make you sound brilliant, well, we'll pick another song- there are literally billions to choose from! BILLIONS? I also like younger students to choose age-appropriate songs for performance.
